My first pet dog

I was always scared of dogs, ever since one chased me as I ran to catch the school bus.

When we shifted to our new house in DLF, we met our neighbours who had a Labrador.  I used to play with him whenever I visited our neighbour’s house.  As years passed, I realised that I was no longer scared of the dogs and always enjoyed their company.
I heard that a lady was willing to give away one of her puppies.  My mother contacted the lady to complete the formalities.  It wasn’t so easy.  The lady would not part with the puppy unless she was convinced that we were genuine animal lovers and would take good care of the puppy.

My mother and I were summoned for an impromptu interview that lasted almost an hour.  We were declared successful and were allowed to take the puppy home.
Wow! I didn’t believe I was getting my first pet. I had already bought toys and a basket for him to sleep or rest on. I had waited so long for this moment; it was a cold December evening, when we brought the pup home.  I immediately wrapped him in a soft blanket.
Hardly a month old, a golden brown Labrador, Buddy, as we named him, soon became the pet of the household.
Feeding him was a task in itself.  Like a human baby, he had to be given milk with a feed bottle.  read the rest of this article »

Love Your Dog

Dogs need exercise

Depending on the breed, your dog requires a certain amount of exercise. If you're the lazy kind, get yourself a Chihuahua. But if you're the outdoor, sporty kind, go for hikes and live in a large house with a fenced garden, get yourself a German Shepherd or a Labrador Retriever.

Food

You will need food and water dishes for your dog. Dogs require certain nutrients, which they can get from dog food. Chapatis are pretty good for them as well, but make sure you include dog food like dog biscuits in his diet. Never feed him sweet foods or very salty foods. They make your dog sick. Keep your dog's dish filled with cold water to allow him easy access, and replace it several times a day so it stays clean and cool.

Meeting the New Baby

As the notion of companion animals evolves, pets continue to play a more centered role in the family. For many couples, their pet may be their first "baby." But how do you prepare your favorite four-legged friend for the newest two-legged addition to the family?

Linda Case is an adjunct assistant professor who teaches companion animal behavior and training at the University Of Illinois College Of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana. She also owns Autumn Gold Dog Training Center, in Mahomet and has authored several books including one due out this summer entitled Canine and Feline Behavior and Training: A Complete Guide to Understanding Our Two Best Friends.

"Basic manners training is especially helpful when a new baby is going to be added to the home," says Case. She says that teaching your dog the down and stay commands before the baby arrives is a good start to a well-mannered pet that will be calm around infants. She also recommends teaching your pet to "come when called; sit quietly for petting and handling, and to keep four paws on the ground."  read the rest of this article »

The Flea Days of Summer

Summer is now in full swing and so is the war against the tiny, wingless, blood-eating fleas that make our pets miserable during these hot, humid days.

The flea, while extremely annoying to both pets and humans, is actually quite a fascinating insect. According to Dr. Allan Paul, a veterinary parasitologist at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana, the life cycle of the flea is divided into several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The flea's body is flattened slightly to allow it to move between the coarse fur of a cat or dog with ease. The long, specially adapted legs of a flea allow it to jump up to 200 times its own body length, making it the best jumper in the animal kingdom.

Adult fleas will spend the majority of their lives on a host animal if they are able to find one. Once on the host, an adult female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, or about 2,000 eggs in a lifetime. These eggs will then fall off the animal and hatch into larvae within a few days.  read the rest of this article »

Dog Games

By - Stacy Braslau-Schneck, CPDT

There are many reasons to play games with your dog. It will strengthen your relationship. It will keep the dog from getting bored, which will keep him from things you don't want him doing, and make him healthier. Many of the games described here will actually help train your dog. It's important that you can establish control of your dog even when he's very excited. And finally, most people get a dog for companionship -- isn't playing with your dog the whole point? One thing to keep in mind is your attitude while playing. Most dogs will have fun if it's clear you're having fun, too.

Games as Rewards

Remember that any activity that your dog likes but which you control can be used as a reward for good behavior. Use a favorite game like tug or fetch to reward recalls, long stays and exemplary bouts of loose-leash walking!

Hide and Go Seek

When you are out of sight of your dog, call her to you. You can either use your normal "recall" command or just her name. Be very excited when she arrives. Start making it more difficult by "hiding" behind doors, couches, etc. If she doesn't find you at first, call her again. If your dog is very good at "stay" you can use this to keep her in place while you hide. Some dogs will use their noses for this task, others will just look. Most of them will learn a faster recall. This is a great game for kids to play with dogs, as long as the kids don't encourage the dog to chase them. (I played this for hours with my first dog when I was young!)  read the rest of this article »

Five Steps to Grooming

By Jenna Stregowski, RVT

Just like people, dogs need physical maintenance to look and feel their best. Fortunately, dogs do not need to bathe as often as people, but you do need to learn how much grooming your dog actually needs and keep it on a schedule. Generally, a dog’s grooming needs depend on the breed and hair type. If your dog has a skin, ear or nail condition, follow your veterinarian’s instructions regarding grooming your dog. Here are some general guidelines for routine dog grooming.

1. Hair Brushing
Most dogs enjoy being brushed, and the sessions will strengthen the bond with your dog while keeping his coat healthy. A dog’s minimum brushing needs depend on hair type. Choose the appropriate tool and follow these guidelines based on hair type.
Long-haired dogs usually require daily brushing to prevent matting and tangling of hair.

Medium-haired dogs are also prone to matting and tangles and should be brushed weekly.

Short-haired dogs can typically go about a month in-between brushing.  read the rest of this article »

BEASTLY BEST BUDDIES

BEASTLY BEST BUDDIES – (RAJEEV SETHI)

"C'est Fou! You must be mad!" My laid back friends with hyper poodles berate me over a lean lunch in Fez." "You cannot go back to India just because your bitch is about to deliver! And why haven't you spayed her? What if she lands you with a litter of 13 mangy creatures?!!"
Thirteen? Choking over the cous cous …I reflect on my little one, Poochi, found as a pup hiding under my parked car, having atleast a dozen neighbourhood street dogs that looked like her.

Poochi simply strayed into my life as a Gift of God three years ago and stayed since. She grew however into a rather reckless adolescent; 'forced' into motherhood when barely 10 months by a scoundrel. I am still trying to lay my hands on. She went through being a reluctant and careless mother two years ago giving me a bundle of 5 pups (not thirteen) that would jump and settle on a piece of territory over my stomach and chest with a deep sigh ….. Bliss that I had never known!

Born of resilient stray genes, the five pups were bouncing fit named after distinct identifiable traits and features. Boota is white below the knees, Booti has 4 white paws, Bhuri (fair) is cream all over and our vet thinks she is the Street Queen of Labradors, Sletty also referred to as 'lafangi' is prone to jump into any car with an open door, and finally Bhola, alas the one most aloof and alone and ignored by most, who slipped away from our life on Rakhi day even as my sisters tied the sacred thread on my wrist  read the rest of this article »
